How to Know if an Online Firearm Dealer is a Scam

How to Know if an Online Firearm Dealer is a Scam

It’s no surprise that we need to take a few minutes to talk about the various scams that are out in the internet realm and the firearm industry is no different. We have been contacted by several of our buyers that there are multiple websites taking our information and scamming people into buying from their websites.

First, we want our buyers to know that we do not give out any bidder or buyer identification or information. That information is carefully secured in our database, we do not sell that information and would not sell that information to another party. Second, even though we do not sell that information, unfortunately, there are scammers out there that will copy, and replicate based off other legitimate companies and websites, which we are seeing a large uptick in these types of scams.

Here is an example from one of our customers who brought this scam alert to our attention and one of several red flags that this “firearm dealer” was not legit (Loaded-Firearms.com): They only accepted payment via cash-app or Zelle. BIG RED FLAG! As we are creating this blog, we have noticed that this website is no longer active, thankfully, but who knows how much money they have scammed people out of.

AmmoLand.com created a great article with tips on how to know if the firearm dealer you are buying from is legit or if it’s a scam. Please keep in mind these are only a few red flags, we know there are more and that is why it’s important to do your own research when purchasing anything online. Here is the link to the article from AmmoLand.com, we think it gives a good idea of what to look out for and some other websites that have been reported as “Scam Alerts” in the Firearm Industry.

Here is a statement from the owners on this matter:

“SSL Firearms is not affiliated with any other dealers or Federal Firearm Licensees and will only sell firearms and firearm related equipment from our secure location in Byron Center, MI. We encourage customers to call or email us directly if you see our name listed on any other “dealer” websites so we can continue reporting any fraudulent websites to the FTC / law enforcement. We will never ask customers to pay for items using zelle, cash-app, venmo, paypal or any other mobile payment services. We also want to make it clear that these fraudulent websites are not using any private information, but simply using our name, address, and other information listed publicly on our website to appear credible.” – Austin Miedema

The Best Handgun For Home Defense

The Best Handgun For Home Defense

We can't just pick one so we're giving you our Top 10!

Home defense is becoming seemly popular especially in residential areas. Home owners want to have the comfort and knowledge that they are safe when they are inside their home. Making sure to have a self defense weapon on hand is more important than ever – especially depending on where you live. City and suburb dwellers will likely be protecting themselves against intruders and robbers. If you’re in the country, you may be defending your property and family against wild animals, not just burglars.

The most popular self-defense guns you will find are handguns – hence why we wrote this article about the best handgun for home defense. Not only are the effective, they are easy to handle and easy to safely hide away. When picking out the handgun you want to use for self defense there are a few things that you need to consider:

store safely but convienetyl

Comfort

First things first you want to be comfortable using the gun you will be protecting your home with. As with any gun, it should feel good in your hand and be easy to shoot. If there are multiple people who will likely be using the gun (say you and your spouse) you will want to make sure that all parties feel comfortable shooting the gun.

Practice

Practice makes perfect! If you have a specified gun for home defense, you likely aren’t shooting with it regularly. Make sure to take it out to a range and practice shooting with it. If you aren’t used to handling it, you won’t feel confident in your aim should you have to use it in self defense – which is not something you want to feel when threatened. Again, make sure that anyone who might handle the gun takes the time to practice as well. You want to make sure that everyone is confident in their shooting abilities.

Regular Maintenance

Make sure that you are performing regular maintenance on your self defense gun. Just because you don’t regularly use it doesn’t mean that you can assume that it is in perfect working condition. In the same way you should regularly practice shooting, you should regularly schedule maintenance checkups so that you know that your gun will work when you need it.

Safe Storage

Safely storing a self defense weapon is imperative – especially considering you will likely keep the gun loaded. You will want to make sure that you store it somewhere that you can quickly get to in the event of an intruder, such as in your bedside table. As always you will want to have the safety on and do everything possible to secure the gun. If you have children in your home, make sure that your storage location is out of reach and secured to prevent them from accidentally handling the weapon. While you want the gun to be easily accessible to you, you must make sure that safety is a top priority when working with a self defense gun.

Firearm Safety In Online Sales

Many times the question, “Is it safe and legal to buy guns online?” comes up surrounding online gun sales. That question can have many different answers, but when purchasing a firearm through SSL Firearms, buying a firearm is both safe and legal. SSL Firearms is a licensed FFL dealer that complies with all state and federal regulations both in handgun auctions and in the firearm transfer process. We are very adamant that all firearms that come to us are logged into our acquisition and disposition book and are only to be sold to buyers that are eligible to possess a firearm. Gun safety is one of our highest concerns. Read through the following replies to understand why the question “is it legal to buy guns online?” will always be YES with SSL.

Some of the popular questions that are asked when purchasing a firearm online are:

1.Can a gun be sent to my house?

No, all firearms must be sent to a FFL (federal firearms license) dealer.

2.Do I need to have a background check

Yes, all firearms purchases require a federally mandated background check to be completed at the time the firearm is picked up

3.Can I have the background check done before buying a gun?

No, the background check must be completed at the time the firearm is transferred from SSL Firearms to you.

4.Do I need to have a concealed carry permit?

No, you do not need a carry permit to buy a gun online.

5.Why does the firearm need to be shipped to a FFL?

The Gun Control Act of 1968 outlined new rules for selling and transferring firearms. As a result, it is now federal law to have all firearms shipped to a FFL dealer so the person the firearm is being transferred to can fill out the proper paperwork and complete the required background check

Prior to bidding on any of our auctions, interested bidders are more than welcome to visit us and view the firearms in person. Many people will feel more comfortable with the bidding process when they are able to see in person what they are bidding on in one of our Michigan gun auctions.

The Importance of Gun Cleaning

Keeping your gun clean is a number one priority. A clean gun is a safe gun.

Every time you fire your gun, carbon, lead, copper, and plastic—if shooting shotgun—residue are left in the barrel, chamber and action. After many, many rounds, this residue can begin to build up.

This fouling comes from the powder, wad, and bullets. Further, moisture from weather and sweat can cause corrosive rust to damage your gun’s metal parts. Fouling built up over time can impact a gun’s reliability. You’ll find that a dirty gun causes many malfunctions.

There are many different types of cleaning kits on the market, some that come higher recommended than others. Below is a list of the top 10 best gun cleaning kits. You may have your own favorite go-to cleaning kit that isn’t on our list. Regardless of the kit, we applaud you for keeping your gun clean!

Gun safety is a top priority for us here at SSL Firearms. Regardless if you are looking to sell a gun collection or want to buy a firearm in one of our online gun auctions, you will want to be sure that you clean it and perform general maintenance. Of course, safety is also a concern when deciding how you would like to sell your guns. Selling firearms online is a fantastic way to get a great price for your items. As and FFL dealer, you can be sure that your sale will be completely safe and legal with SSL Firearms.
